Þorsteinn Sæmundsson obtained his PhD from the Department of Quaternary Geology at the University of Lund in Sweden in 1995. He worked at the Meteorological Office in Reykjavik, in avalanche monitoring and research from 1995 to 2000 and as a director of the Natural Research Institute of NW Iceland from 2000 to 2014. From 2014 he has worked as a teacher and scientists at the University of Iceland. His main research interest are causes, triggering factors and consequences of snow avalanches and landslides, permafrost research, formation of proglacial lakes and mapping and modelling of GLOFs caused by rapid mass movements.
